Kerry Recovering After Shoulder Surgery but announces he is dropping out of presidential race

BOSTON - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) was recovering off the campaign trail Thursday after minor shoulder surgery that his doctor described as free of complication. While still heavily sedated Kerry announced he was dropping out of the bid for the U.S. presidency.

The four-term Massachusetts senator underwent the 45-minute procedure Wednesday to repair tendons in his right shoulder and bicep. Dr. Gertram Tarins, chief of sports medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, said Kerry would be in pain for a few days and probably need an ice pack and narcotic painkillers.

His announcement will leave the Democratic Party leadership scrambling to find someone willing to run against President Bush but possible candidates mentioned in pre-dawn conferences at Democratic National Committee headquarters include Barbara Bush and Jerry Springer
